Construction of Disciplines

 

The School of Telecommunications Engineering is entitled to the conferment of doctoral and master degrees on two first-grade disciplines, Information and Communications Engineering and Science of Military Command. It also has six second-grade disciplines, including Communications and Information System, Cryptology, Military Communications, Information Security, Optical Communications, and Space Information Science and Technology, of which three are not listed in the discipline catalog formulated by the Ministry of Education but were specially set by Xidian University, namely Information Security, Optical Communications, and Space Information Science and Technology. It is also entitled to the conferment of master degrees on the discipline of Transportation Information Engineering and Control.

The School has two postdoctoral mobile stations for the first-grade disciplines of Information and Communications Engineering and Science of Military Command. The discipline of Information and Communications Engineering is a first-grade national key discipline, the disciplines of Communications and Information System and Cryptology are second-grade national key disciplines, and the discipline of Military Communications is a provincial and ministerial key discipline. The discipline of Communications and Information System is one of the first disciplines on which the doctoral and master degree can be conferred under the authorization of the State Council and has a position of “Cheung Kong Scholar Program” chair professorship. With a series of national funding and construction, the School has achieved marked development with some of the disciplines reaching the international level. The discipline of Information and Communications Engineering was ranked second successively in the national evaluation of first-grade disciplines organized by the Ministry of Education in 2002 and 2007.

(1) Communications and Information System

 

This discipline is a first-grade national key discipline of Information and Communications Engineering and is one of the first national key disciplines. With seventy years’ development and construction, a complete teaching and research system with distinct features has been formed, which has been one of the bases for researches on major national and national defense projects in the discipline of Communications and Information System, for high-tech development and for high-level personnel training. Currently there are 120 full-time researchers, of whom 25 are Ph.D. candidate supervisors(including the part-time supervisors) and 92 are master student supervisors. Also included under this discipline are the State Key Laboratory of ISN and Wideband Wireless Communications Scientific Innovation Team of the Ministry of Education. This discipline has made great contributions to the informationization of the nation and modernization of national defense. An important domestic base both for researches in the communications and information field and for high-level personnel training, this discipline has been ranked among the best national key disciplines in all the previous national evaluations.

  

Research Fields: new generation wideband mobile communications network, high efficiency coding and wideband information transmission technology, network and switching, communications signal processing, multi-media communications, and network coding and quantum communications.

(2) Cryptology

This discipline is a national key discipline. Under the guidance of senior experts, a research team with a sound and stable structure has been formed. Among the researchers 29 are full time members, 5 are professors, 10 are associate professors, 9 are Ph.D. candidate supervisors and 38 are master student supervisors. Up to 25 of the researchers have Ph.D. degrees, accounting for 86% of the research team. A large number of both domestically and internationally influential experts in the field of cryptology have received their education under this discipline, among whom are Professor Lai Xuejia, inventor of the IDEA algorithm, and Professor Feng Dengguo, chairman of the expert panel of the nation’s 863 information security theme.

 

Research Fields: cryptogram new theory and new system, encryption and decipherment algorithms, password attack methods, digital signature and authentification theories.

(3) Military Communications

This discipline is a provincial and ministerial key discipline. Since its foundation, Xidian University has set military communications as an important research field, making great contributions both to the development of China’s military communications and to the modernization of national defense. With 70 years’ development and construction, a complete military communications teaching and research system with distinct features has been formed, and this discipline has been one of the bases for researches on major national defense projects in the discipline of Military Communications, for high-tech development and for high-level personnel training. Currently there are 12 full-time researchers, of whom 4 are professors, 4 are associate professors, 6 are Ph.D. candidate supervisors and 8 are master student supervisors. A large number of professionals with Ph.D. or master degrees are engaged in the research on military communications.

 

Research Fields: military communications network, military tactics internet, new generation communications network, optical fiber wideband communications network, military communications technology, network detection and management, special-purpose wideband wireless communications systems, secret communications, communications countermeasure, electronic countermeasure, command automation systems, and satellite remote sensing systems.

(4) Information Security

This discipline, not listed in the discipline catalog formulated by the Ministry of Education, is specially set by Xidian University. It has a long history of development. Currently there are 13 full-time researchers, of whom 4 are professors, 7 are associate professors, 3 are Ph.D. candidate supervisors and 8 are master student supervisors. Under this discipline are set the Key Laboratory of Computer Network and Information Security of the Ministry of Education, scientific innovation teams and national teaching teams of information security.

Research Fields: computer and communications network security architecture and protocol, reliable computing, reliable acquisition of information, reliable transmission, and reliable storage.

(5) Optical Communications

 

This discipline, not listed in the discipline catalog formulated by the Ministry of Education, is specially set by Xidian University. The disciplines of Information and Communications Engineering and Optical Engineering, two first-grade disciplines, have a long history of development and are well staffed. The discipline of Information and Communications Engineering is a national key discipline, under which is set the State Key Laboratory of ISN. The discipline of Optical Engineering has a Ph.D. program. The discipline of Optical Communications, a second-grade discipline supported by the two first-grade disciplines mentioned above, has a profound disciplinary foundation. Currently there are 3 Ph.D. candidate supervisors and 6 master student supervisors.

 

Research Fields: light guide and photonic equipment, photonic switching devices, system and network, optical fiber transmission systems, photonic signal modulation and demodulation, automatic switching optical network, optical fiber wideband integrated service accessing, wireless optical communications, and photonic microwave devices and integration.

(6) Space Information Science and Technology

This discipline, not listed in the discipline catalog formulated by the Ministry of Education, is specially set by Xidian University. There are 8 full-time researchers, 2 being professors and 5 being associate professors. There are 1 Ph.D. candidate supervisor and 5 master student supervisors. Satisfactory results have been achieved in the research on such projects as satellite communications new mechanisms, satellite network and switching, satellite image compression and lunar exploration satellite image compression, making some contributions to the construction of national defense and national informationization.

Research Fields: satellite communications, satellite navigation positioning technology and its application, deep space communications, measurement and control technology, remote sensing image processing, satellite constellation design, space information countermeasure and source coding.

(7) Transportation Information Engineering and Control

This discipline, not listed in the discipline catalog formulated by the Ministry of Education, is a new interdisciplinary subject specially set by Xidian University. Currently there are 10 full-time researchers, of whom 2 are professors, 4 are associate professors and 6 are master student supervisors.

Research Fields: modern transportation system modeling and simulation, vehicle and street intelligent detection technology, street transportation control theory and technology, and orbit transportation special purpose mobile communications theory and key technology.
